Daniel Gerhartz Scottish Workshop and Retreat

Scottish Manor Estate, July 15 – 23, 2023

We invite you to join us for a rare workshop to study and paint in a historic Scottish Manor with Master Painter, Daniel Gerhartz. The workshop and retreat start with a 3-day painting class intensive. This is followed by an immersive art retreat, as you explore the area and make art using the principles learned during the class. The retreat part of the program offers a great opportunity to learn from Daniel as he demos, makes paintings, helps, gives talks, and shares an informative critique. Daniel’s presence throughout the stay makes this so much more than a 3-day workshop.

You will be Plein-air painting in stunning Scotland, known for its haunting and inspirational beauty. The master class takes place in and around the magnificent manor estate, where you will be painting both models and the natural world on the extensive grounds. Expect to become fully immersed in Scottish life and the surrounding countryside. Scotland boasts pristine waters and a fertile landscape that remains under the watchful stewardship of local farmers, landowners and the National Trust, to ensure that the land is cared for and remains unspoiled. Be prepared for a sensual feast that encompasses stunning color, flora, and fauna while you connect with the countryside and Scotland’s heritage.

Daniel has a well-deserved following of devoted students because of his extraordinary ability to impart his vision and teach painting in an insightful and accessible manner. This workshop is suitable for all levels of oil and acrylic painters, although experience with drawing and painting would be very helpful. You will find it valuable at all levels even the most experienced of artists. Daniel is a master painter and a leader in contemporary American figure painting.

After the stimulating and energetic masterclass around the estate, we will venture out and try out our new painting skills in the beautiful landscape, fishing villages and historic sites in Scotland. Evenings are spent on the estate for ongoing painting demonstrations, discussions, and art-related activities with the dynamic personalities of this remarkable instructor and your fellow attendees.

Other activities include visiting the coastal town of Arbroath, Glamis Castle where Princess Margaret was born, lochs, hills and glens, a whisky distillery for tasting, and of course, the village pub! The camaraderie of working alongside other artists with shared interests is undeniably rewarding. Expect to make lifelong connections and new friendships.

Daniel Gerhartz: The Continuum of Beauty

Daniel’s evocative and masterful paintings can be described as nothing less than pure poetry.

For the past 25 years, he has been featured in solo and group shows across the country and has won many awards at prominent national invitational exhibitions.

The Museum describes the artist as “Classically trained at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Gerhartz possesses effortless technical facility for painting and a deep, abiding kinship to the traditional artists he first discovered two decades ago in the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago: John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923), and Anders Zorn (1860–1920). These artists provided inspiration for Gerhartz in their understanding of the human form, use of brilliant color, vigorous brushwork, and light as both illumination and emotional element. Above all, each excelled at conveying concepts of classical female beauty.”

The museum continues to say Daniel “practices a form of Realism that traces its origins to the great figurative and portrait painters of the late nineteenth century.”

His compelling paintings resonate an honesty, integrity and a directness immediately evident to the viewer. The artist’s skillful and technically adept work celebrates the created world, human form, personal relationships and a connection with landscapes and environments of special importance. Gerhartz chooses subjects that allow him to explore and capture the artistic challenges of color, light, mood and emotion. Daniel F. Gerhartz has established himself as an important American painter among the leading talents of our time.

This is the perfect time to join him in Scotland at our workshop and retreat.
