Susan Lyon Masterclass in Provence

Château Near Avignon May 7 – May 16, 2022. 10 days

Welcome to the Susan Lyon master-class painting workshop in Provence.

Join us for a unique artistic session with Susan Lyon, where she is conducting her first-ever painting workshop in the South of France in May 2022. This exclusive master-class will be held on an 18th-century Estate near St Rémy, Provence. We take over the entire estate for 10-days to deliver this in-depth experience with one of the world’s foremost figure and portrait artists. You can expect to become fully immersed in aesthetics and discover more art techniques while enjoying the surrounding culture and countryside of Provence.

While painting models from life in the studio and around the estate you will be able to learn from Susan Lyon as she takes you through many aspects of drawing and painting that will bring your work to the next level. You will discover how she develops her variety of edges; this skill which sets her apart and makes her a master. Susan is also an innovator and will discuss her ongoing experimentation with mixed media.

Susan is a world-class artist and no stranger to world travel. With her husband, Scott Burdick, she has traveled far to find and paint the essential people of India, Nepal, Africa, Guatemala, Mexico and Spain. Now, both artists are coming to the South of France for this special opportunity to teach on the grounds of a French Chateau. Both she and Scott will share our residence and painting adventures into the surrounding countryside.

Susan Lyon, Contemporary Figure Painter

“My style is realistic with as much impressionistic color as possible. I like to combine wide brushes for sweeping strokes in the background with small, soft brushes for subtle details in my center of interest.”

When discussing Rosemary & Co. Brushes the artists says, “Second, and even more importantly, is the undeniable fact that there is something spiritual about painting for me. In capturing a subject, I attempt to convey a sliver of the ineffable soul of the person I’m painting.”

Susan Lyon grew up in Illinois, USA. Her initial interest in art was sparked by a PBS television show on Georgia O’Keefe, that inspired her to take drawing classes. She studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and was an active participant in Chicago’s Palette and Chisel Club.  It was at the Palette and Chisel that she first began exhibiting and selling her work.  At twenty-three she was the youngest winner of their prestigious Gold Medal. Drawing inspiration from the painters of the Gilded Age such as Anders Zorn, Joaquin Sorolla and John Singer Sargent, Susan has crafted her own style which is effused with light and tenderness, yet is strong and fluid.

Susan works equally in Oil and Pastel/Charcoal. Here is a video showing her beautiful drawings.

Susan’s work has been on the cover of Pastel Journal Magazine and she has been featured in numerous articles written on her work in such publications as The Artist’s Magazine, The Pratique Des Arts (French Magazine), Visions and Voyages Magazine and Southwest Art Magazine.

She has had her work exhibited in many prestigious galleries and museums, including with the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s Prix de West Show, Oklahoma City and at the Gene Autry Museum’s Masters of the American West Show in Los Angeles.

Susan and her husband, artist Scott Burdick, will both be in residence for this extraordinary château-based workshop in the South of France. While you will be painting at the estate you will have the opportunity to paint models in natural light and on location. You can also expect to see some of the most beautiful places in Provence like Les Baux where you will be treated to an extraordinary art tribute inside a mine. (Read about it on our blog). Paint in St. Rémy, on the property where Vincent Van Gogh lived and painted for almost a year. Visit open-air markets and enjoy the vineyards and wine-tasting in the area. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to learn from a master painter while being immersed in the lifestyle of Southern France. You will find inspiration in the surroundings and enjoy the area famed for its wines and wonderful food.
