We invite you to join us for a rare workshop to paint and study art with Daniel Gerhartz in Spring 2027. The workshop experience begins in Paris. Our stay there includes a reception, museum visits, a paint out by the Seine over two days, before we are all transported to the château.
Daniel has a well-deserved following, not only for his masterful works of art, but also because of his extraordinary ability to share his vision and teach painting, and impart insights, making his knowledge accessible to all. This workshop is suitable for all levels of oil and acrylic painters, although experience with drawing and painting would be very helpful. You will find it valuable at all levels, from beginner to even the most experienced of artists. Daniel is a leader in contemporary American figure painting.

While in Paris, we will explore the Musée d’Orsay and take an up-close look at the major works in the collection. Examining The Birth of Venus by Bougureau, the Ploughing of the Niverais by Rosa Bonheur, and the work of other important artists, especially the Impressionist painters at the museum, is a truly inspiring encounter for artists. The feast for the eyes will be followed by an invitation to dine with the group in the museum’s restaurant. During our 2 days in Paris, we will paint by the Seine, view the beauty of the city and museums together.
While at the château, you will spend another week with Daniel participating in his 3-day masterclass on painting figures and figures in the landscape. After the class, we go into retreat mode and venture out into the Normandy landscape to apply our painting skills. The retreat part of the program offers a great opportunity to practice and learn from Daniel as he demos, assists the artist one-on-one, gives talks, and shares an informative critique. Daniel’s presence throughout the stay makes this so much more than a 3-day workshop.
Accompanied by our models, we will paint together in this beautiful and historic part of France. One of our painting locations is in the nearby village of Gerberoy, classed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. The day becomes richer as we discover the Gardens and studio of the Post-Impressionist, Henri le Sidaner, in the very heart of the village. Artists with Workshops in France have exclusive access to paint models in these gardens. We will also visit Rouen to paint around the Medieval city center, where Claude Monet made almost forty paintings of the Rouen Cathedral to study the effect of light on the magnificent structure.

Be prepared for a Springtime visual feast that includes stunning colors, flora and fauna while you connect with the countryside and France’s heritage.
There are other stunning locations to paint on this trip, when we are not painting models in the château’s vaulted lower hall that serves as our studio. The resident overseer of the studio is always present in his shining coat of armor.
Evenings are spent on the estate for ongoing discussions, art-related activities, and entertaining social soirées with Daniel and your fellow attendees. Spending time together under the same roof builds a camaraderie that regular workshops cannot offer, and the connections made often turn into lifelong friendships.
Once in the château, guests will be able to enjoy elegant accommodation, delicious meals prepared onsite by our chef, and sample various French wines. The estate has a studio, wonderful interiors and plenty of views in the garden and beyond to enjoy and paint.

Daniel’s evocative and masterful paintings can be described as nothing less than pure poetry.
For the past 40 years, he has been featured in solo and group shows across the USA and has won many awards at prominent national invitational exhibitions.
The Wisconsin Museum of Art held a retrospective show for Daniel Gerhatz a few years ago titled The Continuum of Beauty. The museum described the artist as “Gerhartz possesses effortless technical facility for painting and a deep, abiding kinship to the traditional artists he first discovered in the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago: John Singer Sargent, Joaquín Sorolla, and Anders Zorn. These artists provided inspiration for Gerhartz in their understanding of the human form, use of brilliant color, vigorous brushwork, and light as both illumination and emotional element. Above all, each excelled at conveying concepts of classical female beauty.”
His compelling paintings resonate an honesty, integrity and a directness immediately evident to the viewer. The artist’s skillful and technically adept work celebrates the created world, human form, personal relationships and a connection with landscapes and environments of special importance. Gerhartz chooses subjects that allow him to explore and capture the artistic challenges of color, light, mood and emotion. Daniel F. Gerhartz has established himself as an important American painter among the leading talents of our time.
This is the perfect time to join him in France at our workshop and retreat.
