Quang Ho 10-day Masterclass Workshop and Château Residency
Château Near Avignon, June 6 – 15, 2019
Our Quang Ho Art Residency comprises a 3-day master painting class and a continuing art retreat to explore and create using the principles learned and enjoy plein air painting in Provence, France. Quang Ho is one of the most sought after artists of our time for his exceptional artwork, his ability to impart wisdom and teach the painting skills to take our work to a new level.
The master class takes place on the château’s estate where you will be painting models and the natural world on the grounds. After the master class we become fully immersed in Provençal life during lavender season. Provence is the largest center of lavender production in the world. Be prepared for a sensual feast that encompasses stunning color, wonderful fragrance and the hum of the happiest bumble bees we have ever met, all while watching and painting an ocean of lavender as it moves in the breeze.
After the stimulating and energetic master class we take our group to try out their new painting skills in the most beautiful villages, vineyards and historic sites in Provence. Evenings are spent en Château for ongoing painting demonstrations, discussions and art related activities with the instructor and your fellow attendees. Quang has a unique way of discussing, de-codifying and identifying eight approaches to creating a visual dialogue. Once you learn these, the possibilities for your own personal growth as an artist just open up.
This workshop and retreat blends a fantastic program of learning with Quang while immersing ourselves fully in château life and then, practice what you learned in the masterclass at daily painting locations surrounded by the beauty of Provence. We are following a tradition of artists who traveled to France to live side-by-side and learn from the best.
Other activities include visiting Les Baux, Gordes, Rousillon and St. Remy to walk in Van Gogh’s footsteps and paint where he painted, wine tasting, exploring the vineyard, seeing some of the most breath-taking villages of Southern France and enjoying retail therapy at the greatest Provençal antique and outdoor market.
Quang Ho: Master Painter
Quang Ho was born in Vietnam in 1963. He emigrated to the United States at age 12. Quang had his first one-man-show at Tomorrow’s Masters Gallery in Denver Colorado at the age of 16. Tragically his mother’s death in 1982 left Quang with the responsibility of raising five younger siblings. That same year, Quang attended the Colorado Institute of Art on a National Scholastics Art Awards Scholarship. With the great tutelage at the Institute he developed a foundation for his artistic understanding.
Working mostly in oils, Quang’s subject matter ranges from still-lifes, landscapes, interiors, and dancers, to figurative pieces.
Quang Ho’s paintings are collected internationally. He is an important American artist and enjoys an international reputation for his work. He has completed commissions for numerous prominent clients — including the Adolph Coors Company, the Colorado Symphony, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra among others. Ho’s work has been seen in numerous invitational and solo exhibitions, and has been featured in publications including Southwest Art, Art of the West, and Art-Talk. Don’t miss this opportunity to watch a master artist at work.
“Subject matter is not really important to me. I can find visual excitement all around me as well as on the canvas – from a knot on a tree, the graceful limp of a flower wilting, to a juxtaposition of a few simple shapes and colors…inspirations are inexhaustible.”
“…The real essence of painting is the dialogue between shapes, tones, colors, textures, edges, and line. Everything else follows – including light, form, concepts, personal beliefs and inspirations. …Understanding gives rise to higher understanding. Working this way allows me to open the door to new ideas and inspirations. One day I may be interested in a color statement, and the next may be a relationship of simple shapes, and the next an extremely complex arrangement of texture and edges…With every painting there is a singular visual thought to be completed.”
We are especially thrilled about Quang coming to Provence to paint with our guests. One of the organizers of Workshops in France, Julie Snyder, had an opportunity to study with him earlier. She says “Quang has a rare gift for painting and he is passionate about sharing his expertise. His eight visual approaches to painting unlocked a new realm of decision-making in my painting process. Rather than opening up a world of complex, visionary ideas, this information actually helped start each painting with a clear concept. He is enlightening!”
