June 16 – 28, 2018 ~ Scottish Retreat
Have you ever wanted to visit Scotland? On our Scottish art retreat, you’ll get an authentic Scottish experience with like-minded artists painting, stopping to see the land, tasting great food, meeting the locals and, of course, paint new memories. This thirteen-day guided art retreat includes three days of visiting the greatest cultural centers. Limited to 12-14 guest artists.
Scotland has a varied and beautiful landscape. Our retreat is near the North of Edinburgh in the Kingdom of Fife, the gateway to the Highlands of Scotland. Daily views of majestic lochs, mountains and the sea are included. It is Outlander country and our village was used at the set for Inverness in the pilot episode of this Scottish Drama.
The area is famed for its natural beauty, bountiful waters and the wildlife supported by a pristine eco-system. You’ll see plenty of farm life, too.
Our stay is in a magnificent house, formally owned by the mother of the late Princess Diana. It had been visited by Diana, Princess of Wales and her sons, the Princes William and Harry. See accommodations tab to view the house.
You will be met at the airport for flights arriving at Edinburgh and taken to the residence. All food at the residence, dinners, and transportation including train travel and accommodations are included. Expect to become acquainted local Scottish residents as we stop for pub lunches, seaside visits, castles and abbeys. A visit to Scotland wouldn’t be complete without a visit to local distilleries for some whisky tasting.
We also added an additional cultural tour to visit the capital, Edinburgh and Glasgow, which has become a major cultural center for the arts. Be ready to see Edinburgh Castle, the National Art Museum, the Kelvingrove Galleries, Charles Rennie Makintosh’s Glasgow School of Art and his House for an Art Lover. You will be introduced to The Scottish Colourists, The Glasgow Boys and many more wonderful aspects of Scotland’s art.

Painting in Provence With Tim Horn
$4,100 - all inclusive; tuition, chateau accommodation, food, wine, ground transport.
10-Day Workshop in our stunning Château near Avignon, Sep 3 – 12 , 2018
Come paint with Tim Horn while immersing yourself in the French life and basking in all that Provence has to offer. In this workshop, you will learn how to convey the sense of sunlight in your paintings. Tim has developed methods to help you identify, clarify and establish proper value relationships in painting. He will also show you his ways to achieve clean color and develop successful compositions. Look forward to Tim's daily demonstrations during the mornings. In the afternoons, you'll paint as Tim works with you and the other students individually on the estate as well as venturing out to paint in the tranquil villages and vineyards of Provence. St Rémy where Van Gogh lived is on the itinerary. And yes, you will paint where he painted. We aim for around two paintings each day. Evenings are reserved for socializing and discussing all things art as we wine and dine in the Chateau’s grand salon or eat outdoors al fresco. We arrange for several side trips so that students can get to know one another and discover Provence. We visit markets, hilltop villages and vineyards for wine tasting. These are but to name a few itinerary destinations. More than that, we are following a tradition of artists who travel to live and paint together. Tim teaches internationally. He has had workshops in Burgundy, Mexico and he led a group of painters to Cuba. He also teaches at the prestigious Scottsdale Artists School.
This Workshop Includes:
- 10 days of artistic immersion.
- All Inclusive: Tuition, fine food, wine, accommodation and ground transportation with one lunch and one dinner at own expense.
- Paint, sketch and enjoy the good life in beautiful European surroundings.
- Daily painting locations: Private vineyards, charming villages, markets (more painting and excursion locations varied upon location of workshop).
- Balanced itinerary of painting, exploring and relaxation for artists of all media – all levels!

- Plenty to do for non-painting partners!
- Airfare is not included.
Encore Provence
10 Day Château Retreat for Artists near Aix-en-Provence
$3,700.00
September 28 October 7, 2018 ~ Encore Provence.
The September retreat is a wonderful opportunity to paint with other artists and spend 10 idyllic days in the South of France. All while surrounded in the natural beauty and bounty of Provence.
We have carefully located the chateau estate for this retreat, located between the Luberon mountains and the Mediterranean. It is a wonderful opportunity to paint with other artists and spend 10 idyllic days in the South of France. All while surrounded in the natural beauty and bounty of Provence.
Dinners, transportation and accommodations are included. You will visit, paint and explore parts of this remarkable town that was the Roman capital of the area. Now a culturally thriving university town, it is here that Cézanne lived and worked. His studio is just as he left it when he was painting and is a stop on our itinerary. Why not stand where he stood and view his personal possessions and the objects that he used in his still life painting?
As September is the grape harvest (Le Vendange) we explore some private vineyards, with special permission to paint there. One was filmed in the movie, A Good Year with Russell Crowe and Marion Cotillard (based on the Peter Mayle book, A Year in Provence). It served as the set for the vineyard in the movie. And we visit another – because of the many award winning wines – which, of course, we sample.
Every day has a unique destination to sketch and paint – but also to take time and discover the area and the people. Your itinerary includes markets, vineyards and hilltop villages that will take your breath away. These and more are all on our itinerary. And, we choose locations where we have access to our vehicles, materials and cafes. Who doesn’t love to sit in outdoor cafés watching the passers-by and enjoy the charm of the area? Bring your camera, because you will be truly inspired by your surroundings and will want to snap many references.
After dining at the château we take up various painting related topics for discussion and demos. Although the workshop is not instructed – painting side by side with other artists – the take-away is growth, new skills and new connection. Count on many new friendships lasting for years. To see if this is the right workshop for you, check the F.A.Q. page. We have shared the workshop experience with many wonderful guests; painters, photographers, a writer, a sculptor and artists from three continents.
The retreat is designed for artists, by artists.
Price based on double-occupancy. Single rooms are available. Discounts available for spouses or partners. Plenty to do for non-painting partners. $500 Deposit required to hold the space.

About The Art Engine
The Château Retreat for Artists and Workshops in France is organized by The Art Engine, a resource organization for visual artists.
We have a mission to bring artists together in wonderful destinations to become inspired by their surroundings and the creativity that comes from working in small enrichment groups. These retreats are designed to give our guests an ideal environment for making art while enjoying themselves to the fullest following a tradition of artists traveling and living together. The South of France was selected for the fantastic weather, sensational scenery, the rich tapestry of historical towns and villages, not to mention the cuisine and wines of one of France’s most abundant regions.
Since the life of the working artist can be a very solitary enterprise, confined to a lonely studio, the Château Retreat for Artists was conceived to fill this void with a highly enriching experience to make memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
