Painting in Provence With Tim Horn

10-Day Workshop in our stunning Château near Avignon, Sep 3–12 , 2018

Our time will be spent painting with Tim Horn, while immersing ourselves in French life and back in all that Provence has to offer. In this workshop, you will learn how to convey the sense of sunlight in your paintings.

Tim had developed exercises to help you by identify, clarify and establish proper value relationships. He will also show you how to achieve clean color and develop successful compositions.

Look forward to Tim’s daily painting demonstrations during the mornings. In the afternoons, you paint as Tim works with you and the other students individually on the estate, in the village or on location. There will be discussions on materials, scene selection and brushwork. Depending on the schedule, students will paint within the estate, or the village as well as venturing out to paint in the secluded villages and vineyards of Provence.

We also go to St Rémy where Van Gogh lived. And yes, we will paint where he painted. We aim for around two paintings each day, as Tim circulates among the group.

Evenings are reserved for socializing and discussing all things art as we wine and dine in the Chateau’s grand salon or eat outdoors en plein air.

Our workshops are legendary for great groups of guests and crew. We arrange for several side trips so that students can get to know one another and discover Provence. We visit markets, hilltop villages and vineyards for wine tasting. These are but to name a few itinerary destinations. More than that, we are following a tradition of artists who travel to live and paint together — there is always useful information being shared between students.

After Tim’s last workshop, one of his students had this to say:

“Taking a workshop with Tim Horn is an absolute gem to add to your treasure box of painting experiences. Tim is a seasoned professional with a teaching style that is full of the same brilliance and thoughtfulness as his paintings. He is… generous in sharing his time and talent. He’s as entertaining as he is informative, infusing his teaching with bits of humor and amusing insight. Tim will make you feel confident that you can reach the next level as a painter, and you’ll leave his workshop with a fresh enthusiasm for what you can achieve as an artist.” — Leigh, 2018 Portsmouth, NH workshop

Meet Your Instructor: Timothy Horn

Timothy Horn was born and raised in a small town in Ohio. He graduated from Cooper Union School of Art in New York City with a focus in graphic design. From there he worked at several design firms in New York before moving to San Francisco in 1992, where he continued as a designer. Horn took his first painting class in 1998 and soon knew he had found his calling. He began painting more and more, and doing less and less graphic design until the fall of 2006 when he became a full-time painter.

He now paints and lives in the small town of Fairfax, California where he paints everyday scenes of the surrounding rural areas. These show the workings of ranch life, abandoned buildings, old cars and trucks or sometimes simply the play of light and shadow across planes of weathered color.

He teaches at the prestigious Scottsdale Artists School in regularly. He taught in the Burgundy region of France a few years ago, and also in Mexico. He organized a trip to Cuba with fellow artists in 2016. His work has won numerous awards and has been featured in several magazines, including the cover of Southwest Art. He is an Artist Member of the California Art Club and a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America.

Timothy Horn – traveling artist

Timothy Horn knows how to travel. He has a great reputation for excellent workshops all around the USA. Did you know that he visited Cuba in November 2016?  He put together a group of 19 painters — mostly professionals, but there were also some students from prior workshops; and he arranged for them to travel, explore and paint Cuba.

Tim has a thirst for adventure and Cuba definitely satisfied that urge, with its fascinating history and colorful culture. It was a fabulous trip, riding around in old American cars, many of which are used as taxis, viewing the vibrant vida Cubana. The group painted on the streets of Havana everyday despite its challenges — so many pedestrians!
