Painting in Provence With Randy Blasquez

10-Day Workshop in the stunning Château near Aix-en-Provence, Sep 16 – 25 , 2018

Our time will be spent painting with Randy Blasquez, while immersing ourselves in French life and all that Provence has to offer.

While painting on location, you will have the opportunity to not only ignite a spark, but Randy will help you grow beyond the technical side of painting. She enthusiastically nurtures the creative side in addition to painting what you observe. Each student will be encouraged to “explore with paint”.

If you are a beginner, this experience will take you to the next level. Intermediate students will learn to build a painting that has emotional impact.

There will be a brief lecture and demonstration each painting day, and one-on-one coaching as you paint in the afternoon.  Randy paints in oils; but you may also bring your watercolor and/or acrylics.

A complete information sheet will be sent out with the supplies needed, as well as tips and tricks for traveling with your supplies.  Depending on our schedule, students will paint within the estate grounds, nearby fields as well as venturing to paint Mediterranean fishing ports as well as the secluded villages and vineyards of Provence.

We also go to St Rémy where Van Gogh lived. And yes, we will paint where he painted.

Evenings are reserved for socializing and discussing all things art as we wine and dine in the Chateau’s grand salon or eat outdoors en plein air.

Our workshops are legendary for great groups of guests and crew. We arrange for several side trips so that students can get to know one another and discover Provence. We visit markets, hilltop villages and vineyards for wine tasting. These are but to name a few itinerary destinations. More than that, we are following a tradition of artists who travel to live and paint together.

Meet Your Instructor: Randy Blasquez

Randy Blasquez is most recognized for her California landscapes, but she also enjoys painting florals and  memories from her trips to France and Italy. Blasquez has been teaching for 14 years in the Sacramento area, at her Truckee studio and in Europe. Today she finds that she loves teaching as much as painting.

“As an artist I strive to create a painting that comes from the heart. It takes years of study to become a painter and I believe only then can you become an artist … one who creates. This is where my journey has taken me. I believe that a successful painting has a certain lyrical or rhythmic quality that will catch your eye from across a room. While sketching out the design of the original concept, I look for this quality. The melody has to be found from a deep search within myself, digging into places that are not always comfortable. It is from this place that I can overcome the conceptual problems that may be interfering with what I am trying to say. I want my paintings to be an authentic expression of the heart and brain connection that comes through the creative process. Something needs to happen between myself and the painting. If I can stick with it through the struggle, the painting feels more genuine.”

“Anyone can teach you how to put paint to canvas, not everyone can open your eyes to really see. Randy’s encouraging and gentle teaching remind me to go beyond the technical, to try new artistic approaches, to take the time to pay attention to the play of light, color, harmony and values – to let myself be moved by what I see.”

Janet Hansen

“I have taken workshops throughout this country and in Europe. Randy is one of the best artists and instructors I know. In any class or workshop of hers, she has never failed to improve my art.”

Bob Ryan

“I have taken a plein air workshop with Randy and have also taken a still life class with her. I love her paintings and use of color. As a novice painter, I have found Randy’s assistance and knowledge invaluable. She is able to simplify the process of painting outdoors and communicate her suggestions for improvement in a positive and encouraging manner. She communicates her own love of painting and makes me believe that I can paint!”.
