Marc Hanson & Dottie Leatherwood Paint Provence

Moulin Estate, Provence | September 24 – October 3, 2022

Welcome to an artist’s dream of a workshop: 10-days of intimate instruction from a pair of landscape masters on a French chateau estate. The program will include on-location painting throughout the breathtaking Provençal countryside. Marc Hanson and Dottie Leatherwood work in tandem, and will be instructing together.

The location for this workshop is a historic château estate between St. Remy and Avignon. The estate includes a river and a historic mill. Artists who have painted here in Provence, including Gaugin, Van Gogh, Cézanne and other impressionists and post-impressionists, were greatly inspired by the region and its legendary Mediterranean light. It was here that they created now-legendary works of art. You’ll be able to walk in their footsteps while taking instruction from artists, Marc Hanson and Dottie Leatherwood, leaders in the world of plein air painting.  All this while you are immersed in the atmosphere, cuisine and culture of the South of France.

The price includes instruction and demonstrations as well as your accommodation. This is a unique opportunity to learn techniques and viewpoints from two smart-minded artists. The low student-to-teacher ratio will make this an all-you-can-eat learning experience. Talking of eating, all the food and wine at the chateau are included. Our skilled crew will provide you with a memorable and productive stay.

Marc Hanson

Marc and Dottie are both landscape artists who frequently work and teach together. They jointly run the Salt Marsh Studio in Savannah, Georgia where they create their artwork and conduct workshops.

Marc says, “I have pursued a career as a painter for many years now. Along the way my methods, materials and focus have evolved. A naturalist at heart, the landscape is the perfect vehicle for expressing the joy I have for the world that surrounds me. My real interest and challenge as a painter is how to best manipulate the core principles of painting into effective visual statements. I’m most successful when I’m able to communicate that joy to the viewers of my paintings.”

Marc’s youth was spent constantly moving, as he was part of a military family. He originally studied biology in college, but ended up attending the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He spent a brief time after college as an illustrator, but then spent the next 33 years pursuing his art and raising a family.

Having a great love of working with other painters to help them hone their craft, Marc is an in-demand instructor and teacher. He is a Master Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America (O.P.A.M.). He is the recipient of many prestigious awards for his art.

“What a fantastic workshop! Marc kept us busy doing different exercises every day from value studies to painting from memory. We painted at a different location every day as well. Marc was a patient and attentive teacher and I highly recommend his workshops to painters of all levels.” — Barbara B

Dottie Leatherwood

Dottie was born and grew up in Savannah, Georgia. As a child, she was constantly drawing and writing stories. She studied some art in college and later continued with her creative pursuits painting murals, working in ceramics, as well as refinishing and custom painting furniture. About ten years ago she made a decision to pursue a career as a fine artist, bought the requisite canvases and oil paints, and has never looked back.

Growing up with a great love of the outdoors, the landscape became the focus of her art.

Whenever possible, she prefers plein air painting so that she can gain a firsthand feeling for the subject and communicate her connection to the environment threw her painting. Her larger studio works are based on her on-site sketches, studies and photographs.

Dottie has received many awards and, like her partner, is also an active member of the Oil Painters of America.

“You can tell when someone has truly wrestled with and mastered an issue; they speak with what could be described as grace…Marc plunged through a wealth of information about the primary colors and their characteristics, the warm and cool versions of each, the subjectiveness of color temperature, [and] the need for both knowledge and intuition with color decisions.

“Marc helped us learn from each other’s successes and challenges. We were able to ask questions and encourage one another, and we finished with a sense of community and camaraderie. Much appreciation to Marc Hanson for giving us such a fantastic workshop!” — Wendy Ervin
