Stewart White Watercolor Workshop
Stewart White Watercolor Workshop, Provence, 2022
September 1 – 10, 2022
Watercolor painters take note.
We are hosting award-winning artist Stewart White and his fabulous watercolor workshop September 1- 10, 2022. Stewart and our guests will reside in a historic château near Avignon, Provence. This château has extensive grounds to serve as an ideal location for the workshop. The scenes are limitless both at the château and on the frequent excursions, we take to paint in some of the most iconic destinations in the Vaucluse region in the south of France. During our stay, we have the run of the entire estate with its olive groves, gardens, numerous terraces overlooking the Luberon valley as well as the use of the beautiful swimming pool. It’s perfect for our extraordinary 10-day workshop with one of the world’s premier watercolor painters.
Traveling in France
Stewart is familiar with France and has a deep connection with the country where he was able to spend some time as a boy. Back then, he discovered the French Impressionists at the Louvre as well as the artwork of Van Gogh which struck a chord with him. Traveling around France with his family he found it easy to see how artists fell in love with the French countryside and villages.
“I think France must have the most varied types of terrain to suit any taste. I fell in love with the Luberon region in France and its villages. ”
Stewart White credits this experience with inspiring his life-long passion for painting and traveling, and we completely understand the obsession with art and travel!
“Being in an unfamiliar environment is a great way to be open to new experiences.”
Lessons from the Village
With a career in Architectural Illustration, Stewart is able to break down the process of painting into easy to follow steps, heightening our understanding of perspective and scale and enabling us to better capture the charming scenes in the south of France. The unique quality of Provencal village architecture and the crisp dryness of the landscape makes this the perfect subject for painting in transparent watercolor.
“There are so many lessons to learn from just one street, much less a village. The architecture of a village reflects its inhabitants and their culture…”
Stewart enjoys the teaching process and sharing his techniques, especially where he can help a student gain new levels of understanding in painting.
“I am fascinated by the process of passing on information. It is the beauty of sharing knowledge.”
Our Painting Destinations
We will be venturing out to paint in some of the charming villages around Provence famed for its history and its beautiful scenery. Other activities include outdoor markets, a vineyard tour, a visit to Les Baux and St. Rémy as well as visiting a host of hidden villages off the beaten track.
The all-inclusive cost includes accommodations, tuition, all food and wine at the chateau. Non-painting companions are welcomed as there is plenty for them to enjoy!
On Plein-Air Painting
“Life happens during the process of painting; life evolves and surprises with a passing of unexpected events — an exciting effect of light and shadow, a compelling narrative, a new cast of characters that shape the composition. None of these events can take place in the studio.”
