Painting with Romel De La Torre and Timothy Tyler
September 20 – 30, 2017. Château Workshop.
This is truly an exceptional opportunity to study with two award winning signature artists, Romel De La Torre and Timothy Tyler, living in a chateau in the South of France.
In this workshop you will paint models from life, on the château’s estate and out in the vineyards and ancient villages of Provence, capturing the light and colors of both figures and the landscape. We will walk in the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh and observe the land that is so intimately connected to his work.
During the 11-day stay at the château, you will live and work with other artists and the instructors. It’s an all-inclusive art retreat, and the costs include accommodation, instruction, all food and wine (except one dinner and one luncheon at own expense) and also entrances and daily transportation to the various sites we will visit to explore and to paint. The retreat is designed to be a perfect balance between painting and enjoying the wonderful bounty of Provence.
Working with models, students will be encouraged to perceive anew as they gain speed and accuracy along with confidence in one of the world’s fabled places, steeped in history and culture. The language of painting will be taught to allow the artists total unmitigated power and range as we depict our individual expression. There will be a focus on use of color, drawing skills, value relationships, edges and capturing the feeling of light. The workshop is designed to create in a relaxed, friendly, informative yet productive painting environment.
The instructors will demo, coach and are available to critique. You will learn from both. Expect plenty of individual attention. All levels are welcome.
The château workshop is a wonderful balance of creating art, eating and drinking and making new friends.
Other activities include wine tasting, exploring vineyards, seeing some of the most breath-taking villages of Provence, some retail therapy at the best Provencal markets and visiting St Remy to walk in Van Gogh’s footsteps. More about the château here. Frequently asked questions are here. Plenty to do for non-painting partners.

Romel De La Torre
Romel paints and currently instructs advanced painting and portraiture at The Palette and Chisel Academy on Fine Arts, Chicago. He is a signature member of the Oil Painters of America & the Portrait Society of America; his oils, pastels, watercolors, and portraits are housed in private collections throughout the United States and abroad. His paintings have been published in The Artists Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine, U.S. Art Magazine and the American Art Collectors Magazine.
In the late 70’s Romel and his family migrated to the United States where he began going to museums studying and learning on his own; works of famous artists like Sargent, Sorolla, Fechin, Mucha, and the American Impressionists. The exposure to these masters’ paintings laid a strong foundation to his belief of what great art is.
He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he was awarded the President’s Foundation Award and the Union League Scholarship Award. After graduating with a fine arts concentration, Romel continued to paint in the Chicago area and joined The Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts, where he began painting with nationally renowned artist Richard Schmid and a community of other painters. It was a turning point of his creative and artistic career.
“My painting is the world, channeled through my eyes, through the prism of my own feeling, emotions and preferences. It is a unity of the visual world and the internal, abstraction and realism…” the artist’s says. A consummate artist in all media, Romel de la Torre is one of today’s most highly regarded artists. His figures, landscape, portraits, and still life paintings display unparalleled technical skill, fluid style, and thorough understanding of light, color, form and design.
Timothy C. Tyler
Tim Tyler’s formative years were shaped living in Arizona, California and Oklahoma. His world was filled with cowboys, thunderstorms, working cattle, building fences, playing sports and visiting art museums.
By age fourteen, he was painting his first commission and while still a teen his work was already showing in Scottsdale Galleries. At that time, he also discovered his passion for creating bronze sculptures.
Inspired by Remington and Bierstadt his early works were still lifes and landscapes. But, through education, exposure and increasing artistic insight, his interests gravitated to the figurative masters, John Singer Sargent and Joaquin Sorolla. As his work developed and inventory grew, so did his collector base. Showing paintings from Scottsdale to Connecticut. His work was noticed by art magazines and he began to win an array of awards. In time, his work appeared in museum exhibitions and he opened an art gallery of his own.
During his forties, he began teaching workshops around the nation with summer workshops in France and Italy, where he became a gnocchi connoisseur. Nearly every trip was undertaken with his children, ensuring an opportunity to broaden their geographic, social and historical perspectives.
His native state of Oklahoma commissioned Tyler to create seven paintings depicting key events in the State’s history. Six permanently hang in the State Capitol.
“…Inspired by the Old Master’s Tyler’s skills and technical ability to achieve high levels of realism are impressive, yet it is his visual wit, use of satire and clever method of social commentaries that he weaves into his compositions that elevate his works above practicing realist artists…”
