Who and What are the Americans in Paris?
The idea for Americans in Paris (AIP) is the brainchild of Vanessa Rothe. It began with a purpose to inspire contemporary American artists to travel to Paris and discover exciting ideas for their works of art in a place where historically so many important artists had found inspiration and formed connections. Following in the footsteps of the great American painters before them, such as Sargent, Whistler and Cassatt to name a few, a group of American realist and impressionist artists would travel to Paris to draw inspiration from the City of Light, architecture and fine art. There they would attend museums, examine the masters, absorb the culture, share ideas and paint together with the goal of reaching the next level of mastery in their work.
To raise capital for the trip, Rothe curated an exhibition at the Salmagundi Club in New York in the spring of 2016, where twelve invited American artists sold work and were able to fund their travel. The initial visit to Paris was created as a workshop, May 2017, organized by Rothe where the artists were able to study valuable art history. In addition, Sean Forester from the Golden Gate Atelier spoke on the humanities and gave his notes on group composition.
The twelve AIP artists painted in Paris together and at the Grande Chaumière Atelier for a week as they filled their sketchbooks and minds with ideas, some new and some inspired by the past. Echoing the ‘salons’ of the past, the AIP artists engaged in lively evening discussions based on specific topics, like earlier creative groups had done, such as the Impressionists or Hemingway and Fitzgerald’s writing gatherings held in Paris bistros and bars years before.
In spring 2018 it was time to show the result of their experiences with some new and exciting paintings. Rothe curated and organized two bi-continental exhibitions at the foremost galleries for Realism in America and France. These showcased the AIP artists’ original works by inspired by their stay in France, from Paris nocturnes to Louis XIV interiors, from winged figures and florals by the masters to figures in the landscape and from the literature and group discussions held in Paris. The first of these exhibitions was held at Arcadia Contemporary in Los Angeles, CA, April 2018 and the second at Galerie Prince de L’Oeil in Paris, France, May 2018. Both were met with great success.
The journey continues. Americans in Paris joins up with Workshops in France to present to you an exciting workshop opportunity and unique art experience both in the iconic city of Paris and afterwards on a traditional château estate just outside of Paris, France, April 23 – May 3, 2024. The trip includes art instruction with four of the Americans in Paris artists and re-creating for you, much of what was shared and learned that week in Paris 2017. You are now invited to be a part of an unforgettable experience that will continue to inspire the artist and art lover alike.
The Artists
Quang Ho
Quang Ho was born in Vietnam in 1963 and emigrated to the United States at age 12. Quang had his first one-man-show in Denver, Colorado at the age of 16. Tragically his mother’s death in 1982 left Quang with the responsibility of raising five younger siblings. That same year, Quang attended the Colorado Institute of Art on a National Scholastics Art Awards Scholarship where he developed a foundation for his artistic understanding.
Working mostly in oils, Quang’s subject matter ranges from still-lifes, landscapes, interiors, and dancers, to figurative pieces.
Quang Ho’s paintings are collected internationally. He is an important American artist and enjoys an international reputation for his work. He has completed commissions for several prominent clients — including the Coors Company, the Colorado Symphony, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His work has been seen in numerous invitational and solo exhibitions. Lately, his work was presented in a two-man show with Scott Christensen at the Booth Museum and he had a recent sell-out show at the 1261 Gallery in Denver, Colorado. His painting has been featured in publications including Fine Art Connoisseur, Southwest Art, Art of the West, and Art-Talk. Don’t miss this opportunity to watch a master artist at work.
“Subject matter is not really important to me. I can find visual excitement all around me as well as on the canvas – from a knot on a tree, the graceful limp of a flower wilting, to a juxtaposition of a few simple shapes and colors…inspirations are inexhaustible.”
“…The real essence of painting is the dialogue between shapes, tones, colors, textures, edges, and line. Everything else follows – including light, form, concepts, personal beliefs and inspirations. …Understanding gives rise to higher understanding. Working this way allows me to open the door to new ideas and inspirations. One day I may be interested in a color statement, and the next may be a relationship of simple shapes, and the next an extremely complex arrangement of texture and edges…With every painting there is a singular visual thought to be completed.”
Adrienne Stein
Adrienne Stein is an award-winning artist living and working in Pennsylvania. She holds an MFA from Boston University and a BFA from Laguna College of Art & Design where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. Adrienne has studied under many gifted and influential instructors throughout the United States, France and Italy.
She has a fresh approach to her painted subjects that is grounded in tradition and classical training. Her bold color choices and her portrayals of women as strong, perceptive sirens of nature, set her apart from other painters and fill the viewer with awe. She creates worlds populated with figures who appear both contemporary and mythical.
Adrienne will take us beyond the literal and show us how to create a lyrical aesthetic in a painting. No matter where you are in your painting progression, she can help you, be it with your drawing or strengthening the foundations of painting.
Her work reanimates historical painting genres, forming a bridge to the present with fresh insight and imagery. The worlds she paints are inhabited by figures, folklore, archetypes, and natural elements that are fueled by a sense of personal as well as universal myth. Close friends and family members are reinterpreted in lush and magical environments that form the nexus between reality and fantasy, expressed through an unconscious world of symbolic imagery.
She is the recipient of many awards from organizations such as The Portrait Society of America, The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, and The Art Renewal Center. Her work is collected in the U.S. and abroad. She recently had a wildly successful solo-exhibition “Elements” at the 1260 Gallery in Denver, Colorado. She is part of the faculty at this year’s Art of the Portrait conference with the National Portrait Society.
C. W. Mundy
C. W. Mundy was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated with a Fine Art Degree and a Secondary Education Teaching Degree from Ball State University in Indiana in 1969 and then worked on a Masters of Fine Art at Long Beach State (CA). From an early age, Mundy demonstrated a propensity for drawing and athletics. In 1978, he combined his love for art and sports and worked as a sports illustrator for over a decade, becoming the official illustrator for Bobby Knight, head basketball coach at Indiana University. He received important commissions from the Pro Golfers Association, the United States Golf Association, and the National Basketball Association.
In the early 1990’s, Mundy sought a different approach to painting and took on the challenge of painting in a more impressionistic style, going out of doors and painting “en plein air” and “from life”. He studied with Dan Gerhartz and Scott Christensen in 1994, and with their encouragement and teaching, Mundy moved away from the restrictions of illustrative art to a looser brush style and freer expression in Impressionism. This painting style led Mundy to a series of European Plein Air painting trips, beginning with a trip to France in 1995 and continuing up through the present. With each trip and collection of paintings, Mundy produced a brochure and a documentary video, which was given to collectors who purchased the work.

It was a Vanessa Rothe’s initiative to create The Americans in Paris workshops and bi continental exhibitions at Salmagundi Club in New York in 2016 and at Arcadia Gallery, and Galerie L’Oeil du Prince in Paris in 2018.

I just finished an incredible painting workshop in Avignon given by Workshops in France which Peter arranged for my 65th birthday which is later this month.
Our art teachers Romel Torres and Tim Tyler were fabulous, as well as workshop leader and artist Julie Snyder, her incredible team members Shirley Hambrick and Celeste DeCoudres, and our workshop members.
We really became a family over the 10 days of painting, touring, and of course fine food and wine in the beautiful Provence countryside. Peter came with me and found a couple of local golf courses. Peter and I are now spending a few days in Paris before flying home to DC tomorrow.
Thank you Workshops in France for this incredible artist experience!
